Yeah, but you have to remember, if wasn't on purpose. He was tangled in the vines, and cut them trying to get free, even against Tarzan's warnings. He didn't realize what would happen.

no clayton did hang himself and the funny thing is i never knew til maybe two years ago when re-watched it. you can see his body hanging in the shadows as Tarzan looks at him..very creepy/dark scene for a disney movie
