This is rare cover version of Mike & Mechanics song, where Phil sings whole song. Phil performed this at Eric Clapton's Behind The Sun tour 1989.

Remember the song American Pie? Well, Dec 31, 1989 was "the day the music died" as music started to suck after that.

As much as Phil Collins and Eric Clapton were in the band, this wasn't actually an Eric Clapton show. Picnic By The Lake was an all-star concert and the house band also featured Mike Rutherford, hence the presence of the song in the setlist. The line-up featured, among others, Steve Winwood, Gary Brooker, and Henry Spinetti on drums on this song. Phil also played drums when he wasn't singing.

@CircleCityEric I think Behind The Sun (85) and August (86). Phil has joked about that he likes Mike & The Mechanics. i don't know whether that's true or not.

Most of the fans must've lost their minds when the band played this song. Ironically, when I first heard Mike & the Mechanics ("Silent Running"), I thought it was Phil Collins (or Genesis). That just makes this recording that much better to me. It shows the regard Phil (and Eric Clapton) felt for Mike Rutherford's work. Only thing, wasn't Behind the Sun from 1984? Or, have I got that wrong?

@DominoRyder I never thought of that, but then I imagined him singing The Living Years and realized you're right. I have no idea which I'd like better.
