Think about this. The Nora Desmond in the movie was not a singer. Since the emotions expressed are shown in song in the musical, the music is different for each singer. I have seen Patula in the show, and have listened to the others, and all are valid.

This is rather horrid.....and yet she's played the role more than anyone.

Not the proper voice for either the music or the character, Glenn Close nailed it. Diva perfection by Miss Close.Somehow, though, Patti is the most frightening in the role, really captures the madness and obsession. Elaine Paige is closest in looks to Swanson in the original. I prefer Glenn and wish she would do the film version, but sooner, rather than later. Getting a little too old, although if Streisand wants to play Mama Rose, then Glenn can play Norma.

Clark's version is gorgeous, but she's not one of the better Norma's

Petula is very good singer, but I prefer Glenn or Betty. In any case Petula is for me an important part of the international music (I saw her in LA like Scott King and I felt great emotions....), Tiziano from Milano

Thank she is overdoing it, and not being cool about it. Could have been better if she did not try too hard.

This sends a shiver down my spine whenever I hear this song, so beautifully rendered by one of my favourite female singers. She is amazing - no other word for it

I saw Petula Clark play Norma in Los Angeles...she was spectacular. Each of the women who have played her have done excellent jobs at putting their own signature on the role and no body should be comparing one to the other.

I think Petula sings it pretty well - it's a very rangy, difficult role after all. However, I would have much preferred her to not sing in an faux American accent because it somehow doesn't come off too well. Elaine Paige seemed to get the balance right: she affected a kind of mid-Atlantic accent, sometimes like a rather haughty Lady Bracknell, and it was very effective, Still, I love Petula as she gives a really committed performance.

this is definitely not the most easy to listen to of interpretations, but in terms of the weirdness, the slightly off-timing and the over dramatic enunciation and facial expressions, it's probably the most norma desmond-ish version

Oh, I am sorry, I don't want to doubt her singing qualities, of course not, but I think this is the worst version of this song (I checked Close, LuPone, Buckley, Mason, Page, not sure if not more of Norma's performers)...

Had the pleasure to see Ms. Clark on the London stage and was pleasantly surprised how well she performed in Sunser Blvd..
