Petula Clark had married a Frenchman & moved to France in the early 1960s. Have'n given up on the UK market, she was having modest success singing in French in her adopted land. One day a gifted arranger named Tony Hatch called her & said he had a really good song for her, & how about coming back & giving it one more try. The tune had a catch bossa nova beat, brand new at the time. That song became her greatest & best-known hit & relaunched a 50-year career. The song was 'Downtown.' chuck
