Please, this song is called 'Siúil a rún' . If you think this version is nice then for the love of God go and listen to Clannad's version! None of this "bibbling" nonsense... *tsk tsk*

First, timeless music. Second, the "thumbs down" OBVIOUSLY are teenagers that have no concept of the origins of these songs...forgive their ignorance or let them go to war and have their legs blown off...karma's a bitch. PP&M; haunting, timeless, and sweet!

Some in Ireland say that after the English occupied the island, they gave Irish men the choice of either joining the army or being exiled forever. In the American rendition of the song, the young man referred to in the song chooses the army. In the Irish rendition, however, he chooses permanent exile. As is common in folk music, many lyrical variants of the song exist. One verse commonly sung goes "I wish the king would return to reign, and bring my lover home again, I wish I wish I wish in vain, 's go dteigh tú a mhúirnín slán". This has led to thinking that the song has Jacobite meanings and origins, the "king" refers to Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Thanks to my dad I have this original record, and it's awesome, not beat up at all even though I'm sure my brothers and I had our fingers on it many times. Some really good songs on this record including Puff.

PP&M cut this one from their set last after the reunion and I do not know of anytime they sang it from then till the end of the group in 2009. We all miss our dear Mary. She was a wonderful woman. I have listened to other folk groups but I have never found a more unique guitar style than theirs. The finger styles were very pretty and the nylon strung classical guitar Paul played added to the magic of their sound.

This is like Suil Agrar which is a darker, more tragic song, which first version I heard on Pentangle's In the Round. This is nice, no doubt americanized

My mom used to sing this song to me before bed as a child and now I sing it to my son and it puts him right to sleep. I love this song.

Shule, shule, shule-a-roo,Shule-a-rak-shak, shule-a-ba-ba-coo.When I saw my Sally Babby Beal, come bibble in the boo shy Lorey. (2 times)Here I sit on Buttermilk Hill;who would blame me, cry my fill;Every tear would turn a mill,Johnny's gone for a soldier.Shule, shule, shule-a-roo,Shule-a-rak-shak, shule-a-ba-ba-coo.When I saw my Sally Babby Beal, come bibble in the boo shy Lorey.I sold my flax, I sold my wheel,to buy my love a sword of steel; So in battle he might wield,Johnny's gone for a soldier.(Shule, shule, shule-a-roo,Shule-a-rak-shak, shule-a-ba-ba-coo.When I saw my Sally Babby Beal, come bibble in the boo shy Lorey.)Oh my baby, oh, my love, gone the rainbow, gone the dove.Your father was my only love;Johnny's gone for the soldier.Shule, shule, shule-a-roo,Shule-a-rak-shak, shule-a-ba-ba-coo.When I saw my Sally Babby Beal, come bibble in the boo shy Lorey. It's adapted from a traditional Irish song Siul a Run (or Siúil A Rún) and while some of the Irish words are intact in Gone the Rainbow, a good number of them have been replaced with nonsense words in the chorus.
