From the "Up" album.
There's always one song on a Gabriel album that *seems* lightweight, but has hidden depth. "The Barry Williams Show" is a down-beat, jazzy song dealing with reality talk shows on the trash-TV such as Jerry Springer, Oprah, Ricki Lake, Conan, etc. It's mocking talk shows where the crazier the episode or guests are, the better.
This song was not originally meant to reference the Brady Bunch actor Barry Williams. Gabriel reportedly wanted a plain ordinary sounding name for the title. He stated in several interviews that he never watched Barry Williams´ "The Brady Bunch" or knew there was an American actor with that name. Barry Williams (the actor) does appear briefly in the song's video at the beginning as a member of the talk show audience.
Sean Penn directed music video for this song.
