I've sometimes fallen flat on my face regarding recommendations in the past (generally speaking), but why not starting with Wikipedia articles as "Music of Germany" and "German Rock" and going further down from there to articles of sub genres, there are many bands/musicians listed there and nowadays there are many opportunities to have a first impression of them, here on youtube, on spotify or elsewhere.

Peter Gabriel used a phonetic transcript, the translations were done by German director and author Horst Königstein.

Ich hab das zweite deutsche Album, interessantes Experiment, obwohl schon klar ist, dass so etwas selten Sinn macht und dann auch kaum irgendwo wiederholt wurde, wenn man von Schlageinterpreten wie Milva oder Roger Whittaker absieht. Man hört schon, dass Gabriel von einer phonetischen Niederschrift aus "abgesungen" hat, aber immerhin mal dieser Wagemut, so etwas zu tun.

I've been looking for this everywhere--it's the version I'm familiar with & it's takes the song from great to unforgettable. 3:24 onward esp. Thanks for sharing this.

This song - which is what I was referring to - pretty much eschews all reference and meaning to the original, which was short-wave signals. And in reference to the actual Deutches albums, Shock the Monkey loses it's double meaning in the translation of the phrase 'cover me'. There are other instances on both albums. The translations are basically very good, they sound great against the music, and as true to the originals as, I guess, Pete and Horst could get, though - I agree.

Actually the translation on both his german albums is stellar, there's really nothing lost in translation at all
