Pete Seeger- Both Sides, Now
Originally written/sang by- Joni Mitchell (1969). She re-recorded the song in a lusher, more orchestrated version for the album Both Sides Now, released in 2000. This video is a tribute to Mr. Pete Seeger.
Joni said, ' I was reading a book, and I haven't finished it yet, called "Henderson the Rain King." And there's a line in it that I especially got hung up on that was about when he was flying to Africa and searching for something, he said that in an age when people could look up and down at clouds, they shouldn't be afraid to die. I put down the book, looked out the window and saw clouds too, and I immediately started writing the song. I had no idea that the song would become as popular as it did. And so I got this idea 'from both sides now.' There are a lot of sides to everything, and so the song is called "From Both Sides, Now.
It is one of Joni's best-known songs (along with "Big Yellow Taxi", "Woodstock", and "A Case of You"). It was written in March 1967, inspired by a passage in Henderson the Rain King by Saul Bellow.
Pete Seeger added a more optimistic fourth verse to the song. The new lyrics are in Seeger's book Where Have All the Flowers Gone in the chapter "New Words?"
This song was covered by many artist last few decades from 60's to till now- Judy Collins, Frank Sinatra, Leonard Nimoy, Nana Mouskouri, Willie Nelson, Neil Diamond, Andy Williams, and many more.
Both Sides, Now
by Joni Mitchell
Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way
But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day
I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all.
Daughter, daughter, don't you know
You're not the first to feel just so?
So let me say, before I go,
It's worth it any way:
Some day we all may be surprised,
We'll wake, and open up our eyes
And then at last, we'll realize
The whole world feels this way:
We've all been living upside down
And turned around, with love unfound
Until we turn and face the sun
All of us, yes, everyone.
