One of the greatest pop/jazz clarinetists of all time. Right up there with Goodman, Shaw, and DeFranco.

I was on a band trip with the Missouri Lions Club Marching Band, in New Orleans in 1977. I walked into a bar and Mr Fountain was playing. Very small venue, he was about 20 feet away. Naked women at the bar. Goose bumps then and Goose bumps now....and it wasn't the women. There were women everywhere and I became numb to that oddity but nothing can stop his music from touching your soul.

Actually, plenty of people dislike jazz, but happily, I am not in their ranks. Peter Fountain is surely one of the top 5 jazz clarinetists of all time.

Our New Orleans treasure! He's a real sweetheart in person too. Lovely memories of meeting him.

And guess what, if you stick with it and get really good, you can get a paid scholarship for school and get a job where you earn twice as much as them. Regardless, if you enjoy it at all, keep doing it, because it will develop into a deep passion. From a fellow clarinetist.

Who are the four crazy people that don't like jazz?

And don't forget Artie Shaw was quite successful as a clarinetist and band leader at the same time as Benny Goodman. More recent male woodwind players include Chris Vadala (Chuck Mangione's clarient/sax man), the flute player in Jethro Tull, Greg Ham (sax & flute) of Men at Work, Clarence Clemons (Springsteen's sax man), and many others in jazz, rock, pop and classical music.

Ignorant people always lash out at things they can't understand or don't know how to do. It's a defense mechanism for them and gets caught up in a pack mentality. Don't define yourself by what you don't do or what others tell you not to do.

Hi Jim! Why does`nt Pete play songs of OK-DREAMBAND? "Your Eyes Are So Blue" or "Clarinet-Dreams" for example. A friend of mine has sheet-music. I`m sure, Pete could perform hit-records.

@cannonballblues YES, I'm sure! This other clarinet players vibrato and tone is exactly like Acker Bilk. Listen to those songs and then listen to Acker Bilk playing Stranger On The Shore or him playing any slow song.
