It seemed a crime to me that no-one has uploaded this yet, so I spent all afternoon teaching myself how to upload videos to youtube to set things right. This is the unforgettable title track from Pete Atkin's brilliant debut album.

Music: Pete Atkin

Lyrics: Clive James

Definitely one of my Desert Island Discs! What clever lyrics and Pete's deadpan delivery only serves to emphasise Clive's genius.

No doubt Clive James is a clever man and I remember Pete Atkin and him writing a song called Song For Rita on Atkin's album Live LIbel, pretending it was by a singer called Griff Gostuffyourself. This was obviously a piss-take on Kris Kristofferson and his then wife Rita Coolidge. The irony is that a lot more people have listened to Kristofferson's lyrics and liked them than any of James's poems.

"In the heart of the glass I saw galaxies born,The eye of the storm and the light of the dawn"..."But I can't even get the Lone Ranger"Clive James' lyrics really did range from the sublime to the ridiculous.

A mate loaned me the LP in the early 80s and I've never forgotten it. Superb craftsmanship in both words and performance. Should be better known.

This song is genius. I think it's one of PA's and Clive James's best. The whole album deserves more coverage, thankfully they're all available on CD, and he's still doing the odd gig, if you haven't already check out his website. Great upload, cheers.

Someone's already uploaded it to Youtube (it just doesn't have Pete Atkin's name on it for some reason). Search 'Master of the Revels' and you'll find it (Youtube won't let me put video links in the comments).

Can you find a copy of "Master of the Revels", co-written with Clive James?

I used to sing this at The Rose and Crown and at Dot's Diner in Stalybridge (70's), a great song, always popular. A few years back I dusted off my guitar and went to a few Manchester folk clubs. Oldies were so pleased to hear it again, and the youngsters wanted to know where to find it. Now I can tell them. The tune is lovely and the words are, obviously, magical. The story is so well told that 60 lines just fly by. Tambourine Man has 48 lines, or 32 if you count the chorus only once.

This was the first Vinyl that Alan Kay and I purchased in Silver Arcade as a raffle prize for the opening night of Leicester 'PolyFolk" (held at the Fletcher Hall and later on at the Princess Charlotte pub) (1973) ... I still have it ... we only sold two tickets. :)
