45 Songs in 45 Days, #22:I have a few standard genres that I stick to mostly. Punk. Metal. A little indie hip hop and a bit of Americana. The occasional sludge-core release to get me through winter. Those are my personal safe zones musically. But everyone once in a while, I fall in love with an album that's just not really easily dropped into any of those lots. Pepe Deluxe's "Queen of the Wave" is like that. It's sort of a throw-back surf rock sound, but wrapped up in a bit of a prog rock/rock opera package. I don't know, man. It's weird, but hella entertaining. Sort of like that one year I fell in love with the Red Elvises.This is how the band describes themselves:"Pepe DeluxÉ is an inter-continental collective orchestra directed by James Spectrum - Baron of Sealand and Paul MalmstrÖm- an explorer of worlds both known and unknown."So there you go. Intercontinental collective orchestra directed by the Baron of Sealand* and Erick Malmstrom's long lost cousin.Also, they're from Finland.Also also, they're funded in part by a grant from Ron Jeremy. No, seriously. Ron Jeremy pays for them to make records. Because, why the hell not, right?*we do not currently believe any of the primary members of this band are in fact related by blood or marriage to the Bates monarchy of Sealand**, although they very well could be involved with the Achenbacherist rebellion in exile from Sealand.**if you've never read about the Bates family and the shenanigans around Sealand, pour yourself something good and long-lasting and hit Wiki on this one man. It's *fantastic.* Like Pepe Deluxe.
