I actually find myself liking this, more interesting riffs than I expected, but you have to remember in the 80s it was the battle of the guitar virtuoso, with guys like E. VanHalen, Randy Rhodes, etc Malmsteen. Their sound is straight from the 70s underground metal scene, the music just kind of got ahead of them, and lead guitar by now was at its pinnacle and seriously, unless you could shred at mach speed and had a very deep bag of tricks and licks with the required two handed tapping and whammy bar gymnastics, you just weren't going to get much attention. That's what the 90s was all about really, the pendulum swung the other way and then we had grunge and an obsessive disdain for guitar leads, basically a rebellion against 80s excess.
