Very common for artists and orchestras to record Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Day as those were among the few times they were off the road (among the famous New Year's Day recordings is Joni James' "Your Cheatin' Heart"). In her earliest Goodman recordings Lee is almost unrecognizable and, in fact, he recorded some of her earliest songs twice trying to get more feeling and shading out of her even though he believed band singers should sing their songs straight (I could never see any difference in the original and the remake in the twice-done songs except for "Elmer's Tune," where in the original version she sounds almost catatonic (it was her first recording session and she was terrified). She quickly came along and ascended from band singer to extraordinary artist within the space of a year. The big breakthrough was "Why Don't You Do Right," where she sounded nothing like she had before and gave the impression of a black singer in a white woman's body (as I remember she was influenced by Lil Green's recording). She became a big star on Capitol, then became a highly-regarded jazz singer on Decca, then returned to Capitol for a long and outstanding stretch as both a hit maker and superlative album artist. One of her best albums, "Mink Jazz," really wasn't an album, but a compilation of recordings she had made over the space of several recording sessions involving several projects. But one of her best albums nevertheless.

Such beautiful voice! Listening to this song and Peggy's lovely singing really brings back the most lovely memory when I first fell in love in London with a lovely Auburn hair lady, who was so sweet and gentle, considerate and loving. Thanks! Peggy's lovely voice also brings a smile to my face while listening to this song!

The English Patient brought me here...and it sounded so familiar I was in a frenzy to find it. I'm nearly 17 and I adore this song!
