This Meredith Wilson song was originally not included on the British release of the Peggy Lee album "Latin ala Lee" but the song was later released in England on March 25, 1961, where it eventually rose to #30 on the pop charts. A young woman by the name of Bett Robbins took a recording with her while "baby-sitting" for her younger cousins, the McCartney brothers. Paul heard and loved this Peggy Lee version, and the song was eventually included on their first album, "Meet the Beatles." It was one of 5 songs featured on their debut live performance on the Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964. "Till There Was You" was the only American Broadway show tune the Beatles ever recorded.

Prefer helen o'connor's version better music this is just ok. Background music is bland.

I would argue that being a " cover " is one of the first steps a song must take on the road to becoming a " standard " thus making little difference between the two. However playing covers or standards is not demeaning and pretty much every musician ever has played or does plays some else's music at some point in their career. There's no shame in it.

I'll still take Shirley Jones singing this in 'The Music Man' in 1962. In fact, I'll still take...........oh, never mind.

@burpo not the latter; I meant "till" is more popular in the UK.

@burpo That is not accurate. "Till" is the original form of "until," not an abbreviation for it. Until, till and 'til are all acceptable, although the latter is more common in the UK.

I remember when I got my first CD player. I played over and over again a bootleg disc of Peggy Lee classics. The clarity of Peggy Lee in stereo was so intense, I sometimes had to take off my headphones and just cry. This song takes me right back.
