Balaklava, Pearls Before Swine (1968)

"Tom Rapp's Pearls Before Swine were perhaps the greatest band venturing in psychedelic-folk during the 1960s. Their two masterpieces, One Nation Underground (1967) and especially Balaklava (1968) are mosaics of atmospheric songs that defy classification, evoking the hallucinated state of Dali's surrealism, lushly arranged, and influenced by both classical and jazz music." -Piero Scaruffi on Pearls Before Swine

“ AROUND HER SHONE THE NAMELESS CHARMS UNMARKED BY HER ALONE. THE LIGHT OF LOVE, THE PURITY OF GRACE, THE MIND, THE MUSIC BREATHING FROM HER FACE, THE HEART WHOSE SOFTNESS HARMONIZED THE WHOLE, AND, OH! THAT EYE WAS IN ITSELF A SOUL. ” - BYRON *

This song by L Cohen or F Hardy is breath taking. Yesterday I was doing my sport, while running with my mp3 player & headphones on, I heard this version, which I have long known, but I had never paid particular attention to the English Horn in the background. I burst into tears, really, while running through the countryside, with a sky between tears & laughter. Hey people out there please listen to this song with a headphone on, & concentrate on those marvels, those marvellous sounds from above.

The album cover is taken from "The Triumph of Death" an oil painting on panel, painted c. 1562 by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, it depicts the grotesque horrors of war. Tom Rapp wanted to produce a themed anti-war album, and chose the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava in 1854 as an example of the futility of war. The album was dedicated to Private Edward Slovik, the only US soldier executed for desertion in the Second World War. {Wikipedia}
