This version was I think specially written for the Pavarotti and Friends concert of 2003, which was raising money for the refugees in Iraq, following the invasion of Iraq during March 2003. I think Bono's text was a timely comment to the politicians who sent young people to fight and die in a foreign country without having to carry the same burdens themselves.... And to you who only judge from this recording - experiencing this duet in a dark, warm Italian spring night together with tens of thousands of people was just magic.

Bono didn't sing Ave Maria as written centuries ago. What he sang was not the Ave Maria, but a political message. He ruined this song. Pavarotti sang it correctly. If I was Pavarotti I would have walked of the stage. Besides Bono changing the words with his own social political message, he can't sing.

When you juxtapose a pop singer with a great tenor - the most highly regarded tenor of his time - it's not a singing contest. It's what they're saying; it's drawing attention to a message. I never heard or saw this "Ave Maria" before an hour ago and may have a better developed reaction in another hour or two, but I want to add my comment now. I personally think was brilliant of Pavarotti to invite one of his many "friends," the great humanitarian U2's Bono, along side him as he sings that most sacred song in the Christian religion, the Hail to Mary, the Mother of God. Bono sings too, of course, follows the tune, but has his own message for Mary: "Ave Maria, where is the justice in this world? The wicked make so much noise, Mother." He continues, "The rightious stay oddly still. With no wisdom, all of the riches in the world leave us poor tonight...war is always the choice of the children who will not have to fight." Pavarotti sticks to script. These are the beautiful lines in English: "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee. Blessed art Thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. Hail Mary, Mother of God. Pray for us sinners now and in the hour of our death." Pavarotti knows people (like me) enjoy hearing him sing sacred songs. While tuning in to him, he wants us to hear from Bono- "War is always the choice of the chosen who will not have to fight." Is there any parallel in these two different "hails"? I haven't read any of the previous comments except the most recent posts: "Leave the singing of 'Ave Maria' to Pavarotti." Persons critical of Bono's voice might take comfort if they notice he is not singing, "Blessed art Thou among women." He's singing, "Where is the justice in this world?" More power to all the musicians and singers who bring beauty into this world and especially to those who use their their talents and stature to help children and promote peace. Just flipping though YouTube a few minutes ago, I discovered that when Michael Jackson wanted to build an audience and bring in other star singers for "We are the World," it was Pavarotti he asked to be by his side.
