Paul Simon - American Tune, from the album There Goes Rhymin' Simon (1973). The tune is based on a melody line from Johann Sebastian Bach's chorale from "St. Matthew Passion," itself a reworking of an earlier secular song, "Mein Gmüth ist mir verwirret," composed by Hans Hassler.

Lyrics:

Many's the time I've been mistaken

And many times confused

Yes, and I've often felt forsaken

And certainly misused

Oh, but I'm all right, I'm all right

I'm just weary to my bones

Still, you don't expect to be

Bright and bon vivant

So far away from home, so far away from home

I don't know a soul who's not been battered

I don't have a friend who feels at ease

I don't know a dream that's not been shattered

or driven to its knees

Oh, but it's all right, it's all right

for we've lived so well so long

Still, when I think of the road

we're traveling on

I wonder what's gone wrong

I can't help it, I wonder what's gone wrong

And I dreamed I was dying

I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly

And looking back down at me

Smiled reassuringly

And I dreamed I was flying

And high up above my eyes could clearly see

The Statue of Liberty

Sailing away to sea

And I dreamed I was flying

We come on the ship they call the Mayflower

We come on the ship that sailed the moon

We come in the age's most uncertain hour

and sing an American tune

Oh, and it's alright, it's all right, it's all right

You can't be forever blessed

Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day

And I'm trying to get some rest

That's all I'm trying to get some rest

The song has is about sadness, disappointment, and resent because our society thinks we should all be happy and successful (society’s definition of successful) all the time. No one is. The American dream does not happen for everyone.

The song is about Ellis Island Immigrants coming to our country. It's not about the loss of freedom, it's not some deep message about and over reaching government. LOL It's about the truth our country is based on, that our very existence was built on people moving here to find liberty. The Statue was meant to be the gateway to the land of freedom. This is the message of the song.

".....mistaken ...... misused ...... weary to my bones.......so far from home...." God, is this 2014 America, or what ? I'm forwarding this cut to my younger brother - I think. " .........what's gone wrong ? ......the Statue of Liberty, sailin' away to sea ..." This is, indeed, the Age's most uncertain hours : maybe, probably, anyone who lived in 1910 was thinking and worrying, just like this . I hope to God so.

it should be who feels, not whom feels. But seriously, check out the willie nelson/simon version of this GREAT song that does indeed touch every soul that hears it.

Am I the only one whom feels this song speaks to their very soul?

@mi channal Actually, Bach based his on the 1601 composition by German composer Hans Leo Hassler. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, eh?I was born at the end of the 1950's and, in my life, I've lived in three different Americas. This song almost makes me cry. But, then, there's tomorrow, right?

I like very much Paul Simon whom I sing but I love even more J S Bach. The melody of American Tune is exactly, note for note the subject of choir of the passion according to Saint Mathieu " O Haupt voll Blut und wunden ". He added a tune but the main part comes from Bach.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD, get it? you are shit, you said I have shit instead of a brain; get out of my head. Ask one of your friends to explain it to you. Sorry, I shouldn't have reminded a worthless piece of shit like you that you have no friends.
