I totally agree about the distortion. I have seen PR play this song many times. ALL the guitarists (Schon, Lukather, Geoff Whitehorn, Howard Leese, etc) he has used do have far too much distortion, so maybe it is a request from PR to 'modernise' the guitar sound? If you listen to the original studio track, the guitar sound is almost clean, with just the sound of the Les Paul through, possibly a Marshall but could easily have been a Fender Twin or Bassman (studio photo's exist) KOSS RULES

I too loved free. Have you seen the live version of ''Heartbreaker'' on youtube? Put in ''Free Heartbreaker Rare'' It's live in Japan. Poor sound quality but a great performance. Best wishes Peter

This would be a lot better if the guitarists had dialled down the heavy metal tone, it sucks all the emotion out of the song.

This performance is really lacking without Paul's huge ringing Les Paul sound. These two dudes have too much gain dialled up. Gain costs tone (1st law of electric guitars)

@diamondog99 Interesting assumption that the guitarists who, lets be frank, are professionals earning a living from playing, don't know how to listen or try for authenticity. It may well be that Paul had specifically requested a more modern tone for the song or that the acoustics in the venue didn't lend themselves to the original's tone. It should also be noted that both the bass & drums bear no resemblance to the original recording's tone either.
