Mr. Robeson sings a most beautiful rendition of this song. Merely his incredible voice, a piano and the Carnegie Hall venue were all he needed or ever will. From 1958!

Great Upload! You can't find much of the Carnegie Concert online. I'm trying to find "everytime I feel the spirit moving in my heart I pray" as well!!

I love the confident interpretation. No slow draggy dirge as many perform it. I'm singing it at my local Presbyterian Church this Sunday was looking for inspiration. Thanks varadero1839.

Hello, and thank you for writing. I can't say who "composed" the actual arrangement, but the pianist was named Alan Booth. I don't think I've actually answered your question, and I apologize, but hope this will be a start! Thanks so much for your query/comment! Best regards!

I would have thought that something like Tristram and Isolde, or King Arthur, was the greatest legend the world has ever known.

I don't see why this is hard to believe, or why you think your music teacher was ahead of her times. Please explain ! In English schools at the time, both settings of negro spirituals and choruses from Haydn's Creation were commonplace.

Thanks Mr. Harrison! Hard to believe, but we sang a choral version of this in my High School in New York, back in the '60s! Our music/choral teacher was way ahead of her times, or maybe just knew a good song by its sound! Thanks for writing!

What a voice! and I love the interpretation. Many people have a tendency to slow it down too much. Amen! - I feel like I've been to revival....

This is my favorite all time gospel by my favorite Artist and greatest legend the world has ever known. Only God could give Paul Robeson Sr. the voice that call tears to flow sweetly.

I'm grateful for your comment, and completely feel as you do; thank you! I remember from my youth that older family members would say about some favorite singer, "I could listen to him/her till the cows come home." They weren't discussing Paul Robeson, or any singer in particular. It was just a way of saying they loved that performer! Well, since early childhood I've felt Paul was a genius, and wished for his friendship. Hope to meet him when my "cows come home."
