lyrics:

Here we all work 'long the Mississippi

Here we all work, while the white boys play

Gettin' no rest from the dawn till the sunset

Gettin' no rest till the judgment day

You don't look up, you don't look down

You don't dare make the rich boss frown

Bend your knees and bow your head

And tote that barge until you're dead

Let me go away from the Mississippi

Let me go away from the rich man boss

Show me that stream called the River of Jordan

That's the old stream that I long to cross

Old Man River, Old Man River

He don't say nothin', he must know somethin'

Old Man River, he just keeps rollin' along

You know, you know he don't plant taters

And we all know the man don't plant no cotton

And then, then they plant 'em

Oh the Lord knows they are soon forgotten

But Old Man River, he just keeps rollin' along

You, you and me, you know sometimes

We have to we have to sweat, sweat and strain

Our bodies, our bodies are all achin'

And wracked with a whole lot of pain

Tote that barge, lift that bale, you get a little drunk

And you land in jail

I get weary and so sick of tryin'

I'm tired of livin', and afraid of dyin'

But Old Man River, he just keeps rollin' a

Old Man River, he just keeps rollin' along

Robeson had an incredible life...All American at Rutgers, earned advanced degrees with honors, became a star in Europe, fought for equal rights in the US, black balled for his efforts and that was just for starters. An incredible talent and a very meaningful life!

There’s an old man called the Mississippi; that’s the old man that I’d like to be. What does he care if the world’s got troubles? What does he care if the land ain’t free? Ol’ man river, that ol’ man river He must know somethin’ but don't say nuthin' He just keeps rollin' he keeps on rollin' along. He don't plant taters, he don't plant cotton, And them that plants 'em is soon forgotten, But ol’ man river, he just keeps rollin' along. You and me, we sweat and strain, Body all achin' and wracked with pain, Tote that barge! Lift that bale! Ya gets a little drunk and you land in jail! I get weary and sick of tryin' I'm tired of livin' and scared of dyin', But ol’ man river, he just keeps rollin' along.Let me go 'way from the Mississippi,Let me go 'way from de white man boss;Show me dat stream called de river Jordan,Dat's de ol' stream dat I long to cross.O' man river,Dat ol' man river,He mus'know sumpin'But don't say nuthin'He jes' keeps rollin'He keeps on rollin' along.Long ol' river forever keeps rollin' on...He don' plant tater,He don' plant cotton,An' dem dat plants 'emIs soon forgotten, but ol' man river,He jes' keeps rollin' along.Long ol' river keeps hearing dat song. You an' me, we sweat an' strain,Body all achin an' racked wid pain.Tote dat barge!Lif' dat bale!Git a little drunkAn' you land in jail.Ah, gits wearyAn' sick of tryin'Ah'm tired of livin'An' skeered of dyin',But ol' man river,He jes'keeps rollin' along!

Haunting beautiful song

This is a song you feel in your heart...such a beautiful voice singing of such a horrifying time. The slave owners and insane prejudice may have physically and mentally tortured the innocent, but it couldn't stomp out their faith and strong spirits! This is a song you have to pause for, cry for, and always remember, so that you can fight to keep such evil at bay.
