For some reason, I can't link to "The Masqueraders" "I Don't Need Nobody To Lead Me On"; which appears to be mostly the same backing track, only a much hotter mono mix with a different lead vocal. Check it out.

@PaleRider81 It does have that hard drive that I remember from their early stuff like "Steppin Out' and "Just like Me"

Had the "Goin to Memphis" album in my collection for years- I was the only one I ever knew had it- and I've missed it since- there are about six really solid tunes on it- all "recorded on a funky little tape recorder" in Memphis by Mark and a bunck of black R&B artists with Isaac Hayes- I wish someone posted more of it here, but it's a rare piece of vinyl I imagine.

This song was originally written and recorded by a Memphis vocal group transplanted from Detroit via Texas called The Masqueraders...check them out , they were fabulous. I agree that Columbia was crazy not to put this out as a single. Lindsay and The Raiders pushed a lot of boundaries in their day, and the LP they recorded at American Sound Studios in Memphis (a.k.a. Motown on the Mississippi) was a five star addition to their sonic cannon...kudos!

If you check the history of the Goin' To Memphis album you'll find that this wasn't actually Paul Revere & The Raiders. It was Mark with a group of studio musicians. This was supposed to be Mark's first solo album but he was still under contract with the raiders. I think the only song that the Raiders played on was Peace Of Mind which was released as a single.

This was a FANTASTIC album I had, of many Paul Revere- my favorite band in Junior High-- but never saw any commercial success I guess- recorded in memphis "on a funky little tape recorder" said the jacket- with a bunch of black soul R&B musicians including Isaac Hayes- I've never been able to fid it again- but glad this tracks here!

And single "Too Much Talk" did the trick as far as The Raiders making any statement about America in the year 1968.

I was thinking about that too, maybe one of the possible answer to this is because it was the year 1968, a very turbulent year: the Vietnam war, hippie movement, protests etc.And finally when you look the title of this song, it's..well..I better leave it up to you;)

One of the great mysteries of the Raiders career is why Columbia never put this song out as a single in 1968.

Agree with you Marlo, it's a shame that this song wasn't a big hit as Just Like Me, but it sure deserves to be one of their greatest.
