He lived comfortably for the rest of his life on the royalties from the Steve Miller version.

Actually Paul never had cancer. He was diagnosed with pancreatitis in 2000 and died in 2005 from complications from diabetes and pancreatitis. A true musical gem and pure talent. if you have seen Genghis Blues, check it out...great documentary.

I met Paul a few days before this performance. He was in some pain. He may not have been feeling well when he played Conan. But he didn't really have a chance to get sick of this song. His career was torpedo'd first. He relied on pickup musicians throughout this tour. I also know his roommate at the time was recording all of his shows (of which there were a few) during this stretch. I would kill to be able to hear some of those. I've never found any. This is all we have. Personally, I like it.

I wasn't talking about his appearance, but the performance. I guess you liked it. I didn't. Probably health was a factor in both.

I have a feeling his outward appearance has more to do with his poor health at the time. A masterful performance, in any case, which destroys anything Steve Miller ever came close to with this song, IMO

Boy do I know it. I was waiting for his followup album back in 1973-74 and could never understand why he only had one record in his career - until it finally dropped in 2000, and the whole sordid story came out.

i realy like this old music, I'm 16 years old and I love his version and from steve miller but the sound of this video is to week for my mobiel that i almost can't hear it so can somebody make the sound louder? and take the first 52 secondes away because when i riding my bike i most take the song to 52 secondes and that isn't fine on the bike. but it's by farway the best music i ever heard of my life.

The riff reminds me of Creams version of "Crossroads"
