A bit of contrast would be good, thats what hes singing about. St kilda got ruined 15 years ago by small minded people with lots of rent money

lach neal you are dead on, st kilda 'aint what it used be' (still the only place in melbs worth living tho, god could you imagine trying to live with fitzroy wankers?)as for swapping 'all that land and all that water for that one sweet promenade' all i can ask in reply is 'have you ever seen kings cross when the rain is falling soft?'only melbourne people think there is a competition between the two cities (and their gentrified red light districts), most of sydney thinks melbourne is a pretty cool place but we just don't want to live there

@ Lach Neal I agree with you but isn't heroin and prostitution on the decrease a good thing?

I think his point was despite the beauty of Sydney Harbour he longs for the familiarity and homeliness of St Kilda, but yeh I do get your point

As a Melbournian living in Sydney, this song hits home. One of Melbourne's gems is St Kilda, there's an intangible feel to the place. Anyone whom has ever seen the sun set from the espy (or anywhere on the promenade) will agree it's a fucking beautiful site. And Paul's description of The Cross is spot on - every night there seems the same.

seeing the rain in kings cross when falling soft is not a good sight... I can see the beauty in his poetry though... Its amazing... Paul kelly is one of the best!

Sydney- always so insecure about how Melbourne is compared to it. I think both are great but Melbourne has much more soul, culture...Just the vibe. Pretentious wank is more Sydney's thing. Both are great, but it depends on your personality I guess as to which you prefer. For me, it's Melbourne.

This song was featured on Post & I think he recorded it again later on. But it is a song I cherish & have loved it since first hearing it.

Sydney is full arseholes.... but as Paul says, when the rain has just fallen in the evening and you're heading down William Street heading towards Kings Cross, it truly does look just like a Post Card. Kings Cross would not be the same without the Coca Cola sign giving the whole place a red tinge.... appropriate really ;)

Just quietly though Sydney is full of wankers now. Would be hard to see the beauty through the popped collars these days.

awesome lyrics. "And all around me felt like all inside me and my body left me and my my soul went running" pure joy!
