Pat Metheny: "What's It All About" (available June 14th)

"To me, there were always several interesting things about this piece," Metheny says of Carly Simon's first major hit (That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be), "not the least of which is the way that she moves from root minor key to the major key just a half step above it so effortlessly in a way that is almost invisible. But also, I always just thought it was a great melody, with that big leap at the end of the first phrase. And form wise, the way it goes through this whole thing and then starts back up again to make the same build again. My take on it harmonically colors in some of what I always thought was implied in there."

After nearly 40 recordings under his own name, this is the first Pat Metheny album where there is not a single Metheny composition represented. This is a personal view of ten classic songs, some very well known, some less so, filtered through the harmonic and melodic ideology of a modern master with a most individual approach.

Metheny has some very odd tastes in non-Jazz music and everything else. He loves James Taylor, Van Halen and Santana and used to catch Van Halen live every chance he got in the late 70s / early 80s, but does not like Steve Howe, Robert Fripp, Steve Hackett or any kind of more advanced guitar in a prog-rock direction at all. He loves Steve Morse of the Dixie Dregs and Scott Henderson but those are both Jazz-Rock fusion guys. Also, despite the scruffy long-hair hippie looks, he has never done any drugs or mind-altering chemicals at all, not even Marijuana, Beer or nicotine. He did admit that at one time he was addicted to junk food: Dr. Peppers and Seven-Eleven microwave Burritos which he used to get at around or past midnight while most regular folks were asleep. lol

In my humble-but-most-accurate opine, very few excel at 'purely-musical' interpretation - then, its revelation on the guitar of compositions by others - better than Mr. Metheny; even those considerable tunes with lyrics. And he's been doing this, exponentially and dramatically, for a long time. He is to be lauded, commended and recommended for his expertise within this unique style. An amazing instrumentalist. I think we kindred recognize genius when it presents itself - and then, to our utter amazement.

おやすみなさ〜い(^^)♪Pat Metheny - That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be (Carly Simon)
