Charted at #37 in Billboard in December 1956. B-side of "Don't Forbid Me". Theme song of the movie with the same title starring Ingrid Bergman, Yul Brynner and Helen Hayes. Original Billboard review: "Many versions of the theme of the Ingrid Berman starrer are reported, but it will take something very unusual to surpass Boone's suave styling of this lovely, dreamy tune. His long line of hits is not likely to be broken, particularly since the flip also is strong."

Written by Alfred Newman and Paul Francis Webster.

The flip side of song # 3352 hits my supplemental supplemental chart at # 3248. From early in the year 1957, it is one of those songs heard not in the kitchen on that parabolic shaped brown radio at the top of the white shelving unit attached to the corner wall in Apartment 6G but rather in my new bedroom on the little off white colored Emerson AM radio in Apartment 4C. It was early in 1957 and I was still listening to WMCA 570 - first on your radio dial - and Edgar Welsh was the DJ that I remember the best. These were the early days of Apartment 4C where we moved to a two bedroom apartment from the one bedroom of 6G. The apartment was rented to a woman named Gladys who had a son named David and I have no recollection of a last name here. But they moved out and we moved in. And I had my own bedroom. Where I could listen to my new Emerson radio whenever I pleased. Among those songs from that winter of 1956 - 1957 was "Anastasia" from Pat Boone, from the movie by the same name which was based on a play. That movie had a fine cast as I learned about 40 years later including Yul Brynner, the quintessential King of Siam (but not in "Anastasia", rather in "The King and I"), Ingrid Bergman (she won the Oscar for Best Actress - I loved her in "Casablanca" seen many years later at the strong recommendation of R Kenyon Fortenbaugh from Camp Farrington who was a Bogie fanatic to say the least), and the First Lady of the Theatre, Miss Helen Hayes, with a comeback of sorts after going through a rough period in her life. Now the song "Anastasia" was not as popular as the flip side but for me it was just better. Why I do not really know. I'll find a video and see. I haven't heard it but once or twice since 1957. We got the 45 at an old record show but I do not recall actually playing it. No time I guess.

I remember my dad having this on an early Pat Boone Greatest Hits collection. I was 11 at the time, and The Beatles hadn't hit yet. This is what kids had to listen to and the moody darkness of this somehow appealed to me at the time. Thankfully the Beatles rescued me, but this brings back warm memories of having nothing better to do on a snowy Sunday afternoon in Ottawa, Canada back in 1963. thanks for posting this!

In memory of you, mum. Even though this stuff used to drive me up the wall as a child-now they remind me of you best. You are deeply missed.

Anastasia . . . . ., I only know I love you so whoever you are . . . . . What a combination of beautiful song, Pat's voice, and the music (is it Billy Vaughn?) just perfect !
