EDOUARD-LEON CORTÈS-(1882-1969)

Cortès was born in Lagny, France on April 26, 1882. During his early lifetime, Paris was the center of the art world. Artist from across the globe traveled there to study and paint it's beautiful countryside and cities; views of Paris, or as it became known 'the City of Lights', were in great demand by both collectors and tourists. Edouard Cortès, along with other artists like: Eugene Galien-Laloue (1854-1941), Luigi Loir (1845-1916) and Jean Beraud (1849-1936) answered their call. Specializing in Paris street scenes, each of these artists captured the city during its heyday and continued with these scenes well into the 20th century.

PARIS

Paroles et musique: A. Bernheim, enr. 3 février 1949

On se rappelle les chansons

Un soir d'hiver, un frais visage

La scène à marchands de marrons

Une chambre au cinquième étage

Les cafés-crèmes du matin

Montparnasse, le Café du Dôme

Les faubourgs, le Quartier latin

Les Tuileries et la Place Vendôme

Paris, c'était la gaieté, Paris

C'était la douceur aussi

C'était notre tendresse

Paris, tes gamins, tes artisans

Paris, tes gamins, tes artisans

Mon grand Paris.

They must have had my brother Kevin drawing in Paris - he was such a crowd attraction when he drew things as a little boy! He was really staggeringly good at art - people just could not believe he had such intrinsic ability to draw things so perfectly in perspective.I think they had his drawing of a pigeon (he worried that he hadn't been true to the innocence of the bird's nature because he was so horrified by the diseases it spread if it lived off garbage in the city. They were trying to prevent another pigeon and rat 'festin'. All the Kevins have done different drawings. Mum and Dad were really good at drawing as well.

Eternal Path

We remember the songsA winter evening, a cold faceThe sight of chestnut sellersA room on the fifth floorCreamy coffees in the morningMontparnasse, the Dôme café,The suburbs, the Latin quarterThe Tuileries and Vendôme square Paris, it was joy, ParisIt was also sweetnessIt was our tendernessParis, your kids and your artisansYour peddlers and your agentsAnd your spring morningsParis, the scent of your cobblestonesOf your chestnut trees, of woodI think of you endlesslyParis, I miss you, old friendWe will see each other againMy great Paris Of course there are sometimesMoments when things get hardBut all turns out well, my wordWith Paris, it is so easyFor me, Paris is the good daysFaint tunes, sad or tenderFor me, Paris is my loveAnd my heart cannot take any more Paris, you are my happiness, ParisYou are my sweetness tooYou are all my tendernessParis, your kids and your artisansYour peddlers and your agentsAnd your spring morningsParis, the scent of your cobblestonesOf your chestnut trees, of wood.I think of you endlesslyParis, I miss you, my old friendWe will see each other againMy great Paris..
