It crossed over through Arrested Development and to a lesser extent Public Enemy. Once AD and PE got more mainstream(white) acceptance that type of music lost some of it's edge. It was no longer as "threatening" so it lost some of it's appeal and got kinda played. I think Afrocentric hip hop both peaked and declined with Arrested Development.
