Palm Sunday, March 24, 2013, at the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin ("Smoky Mary's"), Times Square, New York City. After exiting the church, processing around Times Square singing the hymn "All glory, laud and honour" and distributing palms, the ministers and congregation gather at the West doors. The procession recalls Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, as described in all four of the canonical Gospels.

The Choir and congregation sing the hymn "Ride on, ride on in majesty" to the magnificent tune by English/Canadian composer Graham George (1912-1993), written in 1939. The fanfare and arrangement is by James Kennerley, Music Director and Organist at Saint Mary the Virgin.

According to John Mason Neale, the translator of "All glory, laud and honour", "another verse was usually sung until the 17th Century, at the quaintness of which we can scarcely avoid a smile":

Be Thou, O Lord, the Rider,

And we the little ass,

That to God's holy city

Together we may pass.

Tremendous sound! Have never heard this tune before for 'Ride on, ride on in majesty'. What is called? Who wrote it, and how can I access the sheet music?

This is one of the most powerful hymns in the 1982 hymn book. Words and music are totally suited to one another.

My old teacher and dear friend Graham George would be very pleased.

But true liturgies are timeless & thus never out of date, only those who don't (usually rather "won't") appreciate them!

Please don't forget lutherans!

True indeed, fantastic, but only for those not enslaved by the intolerant god of secularism that banishes anything even remotely Christian. They call it "freedom" & "tolerance"! ;)

My favorite version/tune of this hymn! It's the same tune we sing at my church!

Not a fan? You don't know what you are missing. This is my cup of tea.

In fact, this would make an excellent processional for a graduation or convocation.

Write a concert band/marching band and orchestra score for this. You've got money here. This is majestic. This is why Anglican/Episcopalians go to church. This is my favorite tune.

Wonderful. I met you at the Christmas Eve service in 2011 - I live in Wales. I look forward to coming back to worship again at the church and to hear your wonderful playing. Are you giving a recital - a date well in advance would be good to know. Thank you for these wonderful videos.

Yesterday, when I went to the site, there was a link to the Reproaches which you composed for Good Friday. I did not have time to watch the clip yesterday, and when I went to the site this morning, that clip seems to have disappeared. Any chance of reposting it?

Really superb, and a joy to know this treasure of beauty continues, under a new and clearly accomplished hand. Kudos!

I'm a fan of st. Mary's in nyc. It testifies the fact how traditional liturgies can be brought up to date and inspire us more then ever. And james kennerly is the backbone to this testimonial. One of the most talented organists today.
