Oysterband performing at Festival Place in Sherwood Park, just outside of Edmonton, Alberta on April 19th, 2008. They sing The Deserter from the album Deserters.

And yes that's me telling my mom "I just got this song!" because I actually bothered to listen to the lyrics for the first time, haha. the song came out when I was 7 and I guess I've always been so used to it that I never really concentrated on what the lyrics meant. Silly me. That's my mom singing, not me.

Call me a deserter, it's true I walked awaytravelling by starlight, hiding out by daydogs and demarcations kept me on the runI got a little blinded, staring at the sunWalking round in circles, holding up the skyfalling among thieves, laughing till I cryvoices red with anger burning in my earsthis is bedlam calling, roaring down the yearsNo safe house in Birmingham, I found no peace in Skyethe green fields of Derry just another liewrap the barbed wire round me, say I don't belongkick me till I couldn't move then tell me to move onBut when these walls fall downAnd when this world turns roundBetween your heartbeatsYour hammer heartbeatsYou'll hear what the deserter saysAnd when these walls fall downAnd when this world turns roundEverybody is in the middleNobody is on the edgeSpider spins his heart out, fox goes home alonewisdom lies in wait for me, a snake beneath a stoneshelter is in silence or any stony placeI will not share your pity, your laws or your disgrace

As good as this was, their rendition of it on the '92 tour was much stronger. Lee Partis's absence from this tour was noticeable. The fill-in fellow was OK but Lee's always spectacular. Caught the tour-closing show in Vancouver a week after your recorded this. The energy here seemed stronger. Liked your comment about your mom. I remember taking mine to a Strawbs concert in Ottawa a few light-years ago. During the music that plays before the band came on, she said "I can't see them at all."
