Majestic Dance Orchestra, Vocal Chorus Buddy Blue - Out Of Nowhere, Fox Trot (Heyman - Green) Romeo 1931 (USA)

NOTE: And again, this record is for us nothing but a puzzle composed of artistic pseudonyms, which today - over 80 years later - almost nobody is able to solve. Majestic Dance Orchestra was a label name for at least two well known American dance bands of the 1920/30s: Ben Selvin's and Adrian Schubert's. Also the vocalist is hidden behind a nick, and for my ear it is Smith Ballew (or Seger Ellis?...). Even the label - Romeo - is one of the whole maze of so called "cheap labels" which in 1920/30s were using matrixes of their mother companies for the cheaper mass-releases of the biggest dance hits of a day. That's how the money were made in the hard times. One thing is for sure: this haunting melody, which was composed by John W. Green for a western comedy movie Dude Ranch, was first recorded by Bing Crosby in 1931 and has later become a jazz standard, with dozens of instrumental and vocal versions by various artists (Coleman Hawkins, Django Reinhardt, Sarah Vaughn, Charlie Parker and many others). See also another fabulous version by Ranny Weeks & His Orchestra https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUNu1L04ciM

Undoubtedly this is Smith Ballew, singing a particularly lovely vocal in a superbly orchestrated song. Thanks a lot for sharing!

Happy hump day (Wendsday) to everybody - especially to you - Grzegorz! Ballroom dancing activity feels terrific - especially after one learns the basic dancing steps. Foxtrot is usually - fun and easy to dance. What could be more relaxing than dressing up a bit (love that blue toxedo shot you inserted) and dance to the nice music with some friends? Long story short - ballroom dancing is the best hobby in the world. This orchestra keeps the even beat - a dream come true for the dancers. Finally - people start to get out to dance in my "hilly" corner - close to New York. Have a great half of the week - everybody - especially you - Grzegorz!

Trombonology Erstwhile

Isn't this a fantastic song? I'm a huge Johnny Green fan; his output wasn't as large as that of many of his contemporaries, but the quality was always high -- a great composer, whom all the jazz players adore. I love this treatment; it's odd to think of how much music of the Depression was for all intents and purposes anonymously released, as if it didn't matter. So now we who care have to be detectives! ... Love the sophisticated show!
