The Man Who Isn't There by Oren Lavie

Look at the sky

It belonged to a guy

That I know

And I thought I forgot

Long ago

Look at the trees

Didnt stop at the top

Not for him

Used to borrow the wind

For a walk

Look in his eyes for a dying flare

Look for the wind in his yellow hair

And pretend

You see the man

Who isnt there

Look at the sea

Used to save all his waves

For hello's

Used to climb up

His highs, down his lows

Look at the birds

Used to flock as he walked

Through the street

Used to fly down

And march at his feet

Look in his eyes for a dying flare

Look for the wind in his yellow hair

And pretend

You see the man

Who isnt there

Interesting interpretation! I can certainly see why one would see it that way... But I am more inclined, because of Oren Lavie's heritage and several parts of the song, to believe that there is no religious motivation. It seems to me to be talking about an idol, for sure... Somebody that he looked up to, somebody who commanded love and respect. That is, until he finds that the man is just a regular man, and the image starts to fade away. "Look in his eyes for a dying flare"...

the man who isnt there is on the opposite side of the sea saying a short goodbye while he is in a dream within a dream. He also likes to listen to her morning elegance while wearing a blue smile. His childs name is named ruby rises and she likes to strip strangers naked. on the opposite side of the sea.

Boredom is an Understatement

It doesn't matter what this song is actually about or what you think it's about. Why? Because just listening to him sing is enough -- perfectly, majestically enough. :) Trying to dissect it to come up with this song's meaning is like adding salt water to the ocean; it just doesn't need it.

His only studio album "The Opposite Side Of The Sea" is a true masterpiece! There's only one thing I don't like about, It's too SHORT! I'm waiting for new material since 2007, but I'm afraid he stopped. ;(

i think its about a man he knew, who used to have great ambitions and expectetions but now is just a broken tool, a shadow of what he used to be, bowed down by the wight of the world.

I think is about God, because a lot of people don't believe in him, so he is like the man who isn't there.

@penn4tennis I think this song is about a man who feels life and its impermanence., the impermanence and fragility of life. A man who feels basically free, who acepts the change of live at every moment and then that man every time really isn't there, 'cause he is never the same.

I think he's talking about himself in third person. I think he's saying, "I used to be on top of the world and everything was going great. Now I don't know what I'm doing with my life, and I'm not the man I used to be. I'm just a shell with nothing on the inside. Everyone pretends like they don't see it, but it's obvious."
