Operator tells a love story, and every time I listen I change my mind about how the story unfolds. Croce's voice here, as with Time In A Bottle, another of his chart-topping tracks, is open, and vulnerable, and relatable. Every person, any person, can identify with his lyric here, and in listening, it's easy to forget if Croce is telling his story or your own. This is the genius inherent in his music. Croce's narrator here is desperate, desperate to both reclaim and release a lost love, desperate to demonstrate his peace in the breakup and strength to move on. I've been this desperate, and the narrator's comfort and affirmation becomes my own through listening. The chords are simple, familiar and inviting, and the melody seems as kind and open as the lyric. Jim Croce was killed in a plane crash in 1973 at the age of 30. Finding the intimacy in his music is like spending time with him, these years later, long after he is gone. This, in my opinion, is his best track, and I can hear it 100 times in a row and still want one more listen at the end.
