It's more about how people are wanting reward than actually following their own teachings. People want what they are promised, and even hold an elitist view and look down on others. And there are even others that don't know what it is about and love/hate it. Like one would a popstar. It's not pro or anti anything. It's just stating that there are many, many silly and foolish people out there who interpret a religion as their personal gain, or dismiss it as a passing fad.
