Carole King - Only Love Is Real from Thoroughbred LP in 1976

As I bask in the glow of a just-lit fire

Feeling the warmth as the flame grows higher

I think it's true that nothing is really new under the sun

Watching a new love grow from old love's embers

Yesterday's gone but today remembers

Doesn't it seem to come down the same for everyone

Only love is real

Everything else illusion

Adding to the confusion of the way we connive

At being alive

Tracing a line till we can define

The thing that allows us to feel

Only love is real

Childhood dreams like muddy waters

Flowing through me to my son and daughters

Everything I ever thought is confirmed as truth to me

Even as I see the way that I want to go now

Still I wish I had known what I know now

Maybe I could have spared you giving your youth to me

Only love is real

Everything else illusion

Adding to the confusion of the way we contrive

To just stay alive

Tracing a line till we can define

The thing that allows us to feel

Only love is real

One more thing. "Only Love Is Real" peaked at # 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. It peaked at # 1 on the Billboard Easy Listening charts for one week in the early spring of 1976 and was Carole's 4th # 1 single on the charts.

I just checked Wikipedia because I was curious if I could find the release date to the song "Only Love Is Real and to see if I may have been right as to why I correlate the song and the movie JAWS together. I know one cannot believe everything they read on Wikipedia to true. Assuming it is correct, Wikipedia doesn't give the exact date of the release, just the year which was 1975. The song was included on Carole's "Thoroubred" album which was released in January 1976. Back in the 70's and, possibly some of the early 80's, a lead single would get released a couple of months or more before the album got released to the public. If that's true then the lead single "Only Love Is Real" b/w "Still Here Thinking Of You" could have been released as early as the beginning of November 1975. JAWS was released 5 months prior (and still one of the top box office movies at that time) to Carole's lead single off "Thoroubred" so, there's part of the reason why I correlate the two. Yea for me! I finally figured it out!!

I remember hearing this song back when I was still in grade school. I must have been 10 or 11 years old when this song came out which would have put me in the 4th or 5th grade, depending on what time of the year it was released. It must have been released sometime in the summer of 1975 because, for some reason, every time I hear this song, it reminds me of the movie JAWS. JAWS was released June 20th, 1975. I didn't hear "Only Love Is Real" on the radio alot but the station I listened to back then, which was KLIF (1190) must have played it enough for me to remember hearing the song on the radio. Anyway, I don't know why this song reminds me of that movie except, for the fact that I absolutely LOVE this song. JAWS is one of my all-time favorite movies. The fact that both, the song and movie had some kind of major impact/influence on my life is the only reason I can think of as to why I correlate the two.

Didn't recall hearing this on top-40 stations in '76; the first time I remember hearing this was in 1981. I forgot how pretty Carole's eyes are! If she had pictures taken/videos made emphasizing her baby blues, a lot more guys would take notice!

If you watched her receiving the Girshwin prize at the White House, she sounds just a good as ever.

"Thoroughbred" is one of the most under recognized and underplayed recordings in pop music history.
