From the Rising Sun Melodies

Recorded on June 17, 1976...

Lyrics:

When I go from this life, let me go in peace

I don't want your marble at my head and feet

Don't gather round me just to weep and moan

Where that I'm going I won't be alone

The flowers you give, please give them today

Dont waste their beauty on a cold lifeless clay

One rose with love, oh it could do so much good

I think all would give it if they just understood

God gives life freely, then he takes away

What we do for each other oh let us do it today

We have no promise that tomorrow will come

Don't sing my praises after I'm gone

When life has departed it's not me any more

Just a form that has suffered, a still heart that was sore

For the soul that has blossomed, oh it don't need you anymore

So let it go freely to God's evermore...

Lovely - it's in her music. Reminds me a little in spirit of Mary Elizabeth Frye : Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the softly falling snow. I am the gentle showers of rain, I am the fields of ripening grain. I am in the morning hush, I am in the graceful rush Of beautiful birds in circling flight. I am the starshine of the night. I am in the flowers that bloom, I am in a quiet room. I am in the birds that sing, I am in each lovely thing. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there – I do not die.

She was a beautiful person. I had the privilege of getting to know her back in 1973, when I worked for WASA, a small AM broadcast station in Havre de Grace, MD. On Saturday mornings, Ola Belle, along with her husband and their son would arrive at the station, and broadcast this marvelous music live for a couple of hours. It was a total departure from the station's format, a personal project of the owner's son. Fond memories of visiting her at the house and snapping green beans together...

Ole Belle Reed was and is my music HERO. She was a strong wonderful human being and her voice projects the deep emotional flavor of a life well lived. This song reflects some of the same sentiments as the old Carter Family , Ralph Stanley, and Jimmy Martin standard, "Give Me The Roses While I Live" Thanks for posting, I hope many people get to hear her songs!
