Writer: Tom Waits.

On the Border is the third studio album by the Eagles, released in 1974.

Lead vocals by Glenn Frey and Don Henley, pedal steel guitar by Al Perkins.

Lyrics:

Well, my time went so quickly, I went lickety-splitly

Out to my ol' fifty-five.

As I pulled away slowly feelin' so holy

God knows I was feelin' alive.

And now the sun's comin' up,

I'm ridin' with Lady Luck,

Freeway cars and trucks.

Stars beginning to fade

And I lead the parade

Just a wishin' I'd stayed a little longer.

Lord, don't you know the feelin's gettin' stronger.

Six in the mornin' gave me no warnin',

I had to be on my way.

Now the cars are all passin' me, trucks are all flashin' me,

I'm headed home from your place.

And now the sun's comin' up,

I'm ridin' with Lady Luck,

Freeway cars and trucks.

Stars beginning to fade

And I lead the parade

Just a wishin' I'd stayed a little longer.

Lord, don't you know the feelin's gettin' stronger.

Well, my time went so quickly, I went lickety-splitly

Out to my ol' fifty-five.

As I pulled away slowly feelin' so holy

God knows I was feelin' alive.

And now the sun's comin' up, yes it is,

I'm ridin' with Lady Luck,

Freeway cars and trucks.

Freeway cars and trucks

Ridin' with Lady Luck.

Freeway cars and trucks

Ridin' with Lady Luck.

Freeway cars and trucks

Ridin' with Lady Luck.

People; let's stop the bickering over who does this great song better. You cannot compare five part harmonies (Eagles) to a solo (Waits) performance! It's like trying to compare Elvis to the Jackson Five; it just cannot be done. Each artist performing this song will no doubt satisfy their own following!!!!!

I have heard this version many times but never heard the original by Tom Waits...How anyone with a working sense of hearing and ANY sense of music could like the Waits version escapes me. I know waits is considered some sort of musical genius...But a singer?...Sorry...Now obviously this is my humble opinion...but he is of the Kristofferson ,Prine and Cohen school of singing. They all have a voice that sounds like they have been gargling with acid...Great writers...but a vocalist?...Nope.
