I, on the other hand, can't stand Piratess. I can't really explain why, it just rubs me the wrong way. This version is much better for me.

I did, too. I think the "poppiness" of Piratess makes the lyrics even more haunting, because of the contrast. Sort of like the original Tears for Fears version of Mad World does compaired to Jules' cover of it.
