From Black Sheep Boy

Lyrics:

Hot breath,

Rough skin,

Warm laughs and smiling,

The lovliest words,

Whispered and meant

You like all these things.

But, though you like all these things,

You love a stone.

You love a stone,

Because it's smooth and it's cold.

And you'd love most,

To be told,

That it's all your own.

You love white veins,

You love hard grey,

The heaviest weight,

The clumsiest shape,

The earthiest smell,

The hollowest tone,

You love a stone.

And I'm found too fast,

Called too fond of flames,

And I'm phoning my friends,

And I'm shouldering the blame,

While you're picking pebbles,

Out of the drain,

Miles ago.

And you're out singing songs,

And I'm down shouting names,

At the flickerless screen,

Going fucking insane.

Am I losing my cool,

Overstating my case?

Well, baby what can I say?

You know I never claimed,

That I was a stone.

And you love a stone.

You love white veins,

You love hard grey,

The heaviest weight,

The clumsiest shape,

The earthiest smell,

The hollowest tone,

You love a stone.

You love a stone,

Because it's dark and it's old,

And if it could start,

Being alive,

You'd stop living alone.

And I think I believe that,

If stones could dream,

They'd dream of being laid,

Side-by-side,

Piece-by-piece,

And turned into a castle,

For some towering queen,

They're unable to know.

And when that queen's daughter

Came of age,

I think she'd be lovely

And stubborn and brave,

And suitors would journey,

From kingdoms away,

Just to make themselves known.

And I think that I know,

The bitter dismay,

Of a lover who brought,

Fresh brouquets every day,

When she turned him away,

To remember some knave,

Who once gave,

Just one rose,

One day,

Years ago.

@fullmetal78745 I think Sheff meant for the stone to symbolize a headstone/gravestone. "You love a stone, and if it could start being alive you'd stop living alone": he's madly in love with this girl who is still in love with her dead lover and can't move on to love anybody else. The last part of the song, "I think that I know the bitter dismay of a lover who brought fresh bouquets everyday, when she turned him away to remember some knave who once gave just one rose one day, years ago" - he is sympathizing with any man who has fallen in love with a girl who is still clinging to an ex and can never truly love him.

It's my favorite line. I think it demonstrates the passion behind whatever he is trying to say .

This song haunts me. I love playing it at the bar to throw off the exciting, upbeat bullshit everyone else plays. Also, because it makes me feel good while I'm drinking.

me and my boyfriend danced to this song tonight. After he told me he wants to take things slow. But it's okay, because i love a stone:)

Heartbreaking Bravery

Well, you got half of it. That's what it is on the surface. In reality, as with the rest of the album, it's about Tim Hardin's struggle with heroin addiction and acting as a standalone allegory for the relationship he had with it that led to his eventual death. Tim Hardin was the songwriter who wrote "Black Sheep Boy". This record starts with a cover that song and draws up the BSB character as a stand-in for Hardin. Sheff's explained this in interviews. It's a brilliantly constructed record.

The verse about the queen's daughter sounds a lot like the movie Brave. Absolutely beautiful song, Okkervil is a genius.

When my daughter was born and I had to message the family of her arrival I let them know that she was 'lovely and stubborn and brave'

its an analogy about a girl that Sheff loves but she loves an asshole "you love a stone because its smooth and its cold and you love most to be told that its all your own" "you know I never claimed I was a stone" "I think that i know the bitter dismay of a lover who brought fresh bouquets everyday she turned him away to remember some name who just gave one rose one day years ago"

Another Valentines day has gone by and I still haven't found that one person who changes everything, that one person who I'll give just one rose because she means everything to me
