I am reviewing the new Ohana 5 String Tenor Ukulele. The model number is the TK-35G-5. It is available to buy now. Some stores have already got it in stock though you may have to wait as some dealers have not yet had it delivered.

As most of you know, I work for Ohana Ukuleles and I have been very much looking forward to the arrival of the production model of this instrument. There was a great deal of interest in it at the recent NAMM show in Anaheim, California.

Report Back:Well I took the Ohana TK-35G-5 Five String ukulele out to a teaching gig (about 55 people in a workshop) and I can report that I thought it  louder, clearer, better than the Koa tenor I usually use for teaching. In fact  thought it sounded AMAZING, straight out of the box that afternoon, it played like a dream all night, just those strings needed tuning regularly while they stretched out.Very loud and that low and High G string combo is fantastic, Jangle from the Octave G Strings but you still have single course of C E and A strings for picking and runs etc...Very happy the Australian importer (Jacaranda Music) have added this model to the range of Ohana ukuleles available in Australia.

Thinking of using this instead of my Kala for my Teaching Gigs, fancy the idea of having both high and Low G strings

Yes, I think you probably did.

I enjoyed that Ken, a good review. Thought I spotted a bit of Prince and Wimber on the bookshelf? :-)

Sorry, I don't have that information to hand. It is no wider or narrower that 95% of other ukes though.

hi ken, could you tell me what is the string spacing at the bridge and also at the nut? I love the idea of the 5 string uke but i hope the string spacing is good, i find many ukes have narrow string spacing which i really dislike

What happened to the TK-35G-5? I don't see it on your website and the distributors in germany I have asked claim it's not available.

@boundless It works really well. Thanks for watching.

@simonrcarson If the imperfections are distressing you, you should send it back to the shop and change it. I personally wouldn't worry about the tuning issue. It is almost certainlt the uneven stretching of the string. Glad you like the uke though.

Just got my TK35G. Wonderful! I'll post a video when I get the chance. A couple of faults in the finish (little bubbles and a chunk chipped off where the nut has been put in). The intonation on the A string is way off - very high at the 12th fret. The other strings are perfect so I assume it's a dodgy string rather than poor fret positions. Other than that, the sound is lovely and it looks great! Thanks for your advice!

@simonrcarson If I could only have one, it would certainly be the TK-35G. It can do more. The 5 string would be a great one to go fot as a second or third instrument.

@KenMiddletonUkulele So my birthday is here and I have permission ro spend. Is your reply about the TK35G over other tenors or about the TK35G over the TK35G-5? I want to learn to fingerpick better and the tenor will give me more room over the soprano I have. I really would appreciate your advice: as a fingerpicker, would you go for the 35G in preference to the 35G-5? Many thanks for taking the time to be bothered by newbies like me!

@TerryUkes Thanks. Yes, at least one Hawaiian maker does a 5 string as a custom order, but we are the first to make a regular production model. It took nearly a year to develop.

Great decision to make this model. Probably Ohana is the first one that makes this as a regular production line. I have been waiting for this moment for years since I saw some built by Shimo Guitars and T's Guitars (who built Kiwaya high-end). Eventually I've got a T's concert (shop custom), and now I'm looking at an Ohana tenor :) I love the sound when strumming by thumb without nail.

Thanks, Ken, for confirming my decision to go for the Ohana TK-35G. And thanks for all the great reviews and for finding the time to respond! Simon

I would go for the TK-35G. I have mine on the table in front of me. I did my last video on it. It is still probably my all-round favourite.

Oh dear - you have made me very unhappy - I was going to ask my wife to get me the TK-35G for my birthday and now you review this one. I had been thinking about a number of ukes and your review of the TK-35G had me decided. Now what? There's no chance of my being able to try both of them; I would like a tenor for fingerpicking for both songs and solo tunes. I won't ask for a recommendation because these are always subjective and personal, but I'd be interested in what you might go for....

@KenMiddletonUkulele Honestly, sometimes my wife thinks I have a more intimate relationship with my uke - especially when stay in my room downstairs and keep her waiting all night ;)

Haha. Did you marry a ukulele? I bet you didn't. Yes, it is perfectly balanced.
