I think this song is about somebody who is in a mentally bad place and someone falls in love with her and is trying to help her (can you chase the fire away?).She has been improving but she has a breakdown (but she ran down) and he gives up on her because it has also taken an emotional toll on him seeing her suffer and trying to help.I think he is forced to leave her and he is left feeling regret and guilt and she is right back where she started, but sadder. I think this song is about losing something/someone close to you, using the metaphor of a house. So it's like, you really start to love something (gains our trust) and then suddenly it's gone and you feel this odd sense of betrayal (but then breaks it as he walks away from us). The rest of the lyrics just kind of go with that as well, except "In the fall we sleep all day," although I suppose that could be the torpor that sometimes accompanies loss.But then again, I could be wrong.8 years ago
