This is a far cry from The Nightspectral Voyage. They're really codifying and consolidating their sound here, making it more "accessible", which doesn't have to be a bad thing. I'm okay with more people getting snared into The 'Gate. I was first introduced to Dimmu Borgir via the Puritanical album, and then went backwards and learned to love Stormblast.

Sounds like Dynasty of Death-era Limbonic Art meets Melechesh.

Ok, the album has finally arrived, and now that I could listen to it, I think this music is not a good example of the work in it. The rest of the album is much better than this music shows.Sekhmet, the Wrathful is in my opinion the best in the album, and has a good feel of the old Obsidian Gate :) while keeping up with the innovation. It has that Nightspectral Voyage feel that I liked so much. So, to everyone else who heard this and got demoralized cause you did not love this particular song, don't despair, try the album out! It is worth it! Easily one of the best out this year in the genre!

I have to say that I totally agree with Gloomy Pariah and Random2. The production and sound on this track doesn't bode really well for repeated listening sessions; it basically sounds like what you would hear on any other modern extreme metal record - totally transparent, leaving us no room to connect the dots and eventually solve the puzzle. The arabic theme has also been done to death and there are bands that have done it even better in the past - bands whose best releases aren't near a quarter as good as the mind-boggling first two albums of Obsidian Gate, and I'm not even exaggerating here. OG is by far my favorite sympho black band, even surpassing the likes of Limbonic Art and Emperor (in each of their respective golden age that is). I've listened to The Nightspectral Voyage several times and imagined things greater than I could ever hope to dream of. "The Obsidian Eternity and Anguish" is an adventure in itself, with 3:44 - 7:06 being maybe the pinnacle of the genre as a whole. Colossal Christhunt is even more complex and detailed, thus rewarding the keen listener even more. Even after 10 years I'm *still* discovering new stuff. It's like the sound was made for me: chaotic and harsh, providing the longevity that is a very important factor in this genre along with complexity and actual depth. Now it seems like about every veteran act has embraced the new and transparent "accessible" sound which might be very likable and inviting to those who are not familiar with the genre yet, but it will surely die out within a month or two (even for them) such as every output from Dimmu Borgir (Spiritual Black Dimensions is a masterpiece, though). I *hope* this will not be the case here, but I am very afraid it might as well be. Just listen to the omnious symphonic theme behind the blast beat storm in the beginning of "The Bethorian Shrine" and compare it with this...

THE CURSE OF MAN!!

I hope this is the fastest and shortest song on the album, maybe even the "intro", because i did not really like this, i could barely recognize one of my favorite bands in this track. 'Blasting' black metal can be good, like Belphegor, but when symphonies and atmosphere get mixed in, it can get really convoluted and sound like theres too much being stuffed into a short track, like this unfortunately. Damn these modern times, everything just seems to deteriorate, wither and die.
