The digital piano is in tune, but it doesn't compare in sound quality to a grand piano. It just sounds empty.

+Jozey JonesWell I guess the tuning on an electric piano is too perfect. Every note and interval is exactly right so it ends up sounding worse. It gets very complicated; equal and unequal tenement get very confusing!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can record my digital piano professionally? I have a Yamaha P-95 Digital piano that has a Midi in and Midi out (although I would rather stay away from midi) and 2 headphone ports. That's honestly about all of the ports the piano has besides sustain and av adapter. I have a laptop with Windows 8 as well. I thought about purchasing an audio interface, but I wouldn't know how to use it, haha. I'm honestly a beginner when it comes to recording any type of sound. Thanks in advance!!

Where a real piano loses out is that it has no headphone socket. If people had to listen to the shite I play all day, I'd have been murdered by now.

Agreed, but never has there been such a difference in price between something good and something better. This has been my point all along, but I may not have articulated it very well. I have an old Yamaha G3 and dozens of digital pianos sounds in my studio.. I like them all. If there is a Silver lining though it is the fact that many poor musicians can enjoy a grand-like sound for next to nothing. When they get good in rich they can then for the real thing.

I am a Piano builder for 26 years. I have few good acoustic grand, upright pianos and 3 electric Pianos, Yamaha, Roland. Sounds good or bad depends on the quality of the parts, wood etc.. that they used build but also you need a good environment for a real piano to sound correctly (space for sound travel, sound proof, moisture, temperature, carpet.etc.) and maintain it, not only tuning but the hammers, parts. However, it depends on what you use the piano for!. Electric is good for travel, and it sounds is not that bad but does the job (I am not comparing). I take my electric to the church every Sunday, and Saturday nights to the shows.. how many people there are the real musician or how many percent of the listeners can tell good pure sound or bad?

I do see your point. However acoustic pianos constantly need tuning and over time they lose their quality of sound due to old age unless you're buying a piano that's worth 40 50, $60,000 that improves with age. Not many people can afford top range pianos. A 10 year old acoustic piano will not sound as fresh and as beautiful as it once did when it was brand new but a digital piano be it a Yamaha or Roland whatever brand, will always sound fresh and new. And once you buy a acoustic piano you can't change the sound it has. You can get a piano technician to maybe change it's tone here and there but you'll have to live with the same sound when you first bought your Piano and of course it will deteriorate due to age and then you will have to live with that too. Now with the digital pianos you can change the sounds you can create new piano sounds you can edit the tones or sound to your taste you can't do that with an acoustic piano. Digital pianos are cheaper to to buy in the Long run. You can get expensive ones but you can get really good ones in the 2 to $3000 bracket. I'm sure you can get the same in acoustic piano but like I said before. In a few years time their tone and sound deteriorates with age. It's all up to the individual when they buy a piano and at the end of the day, it also depends on what you can afford, what you want to buy, how much money you want to spend and also your musical ambitions.
