I sung this song in church when I was 14. Sort of. There are differences in the lyrics, but the song I sung in church was clearly about Mary and Joseph getting baby Jesus out of Bethlehem before King Herod could get his army to kill all the boys born around then, because of a prophecy that one of them might grow up to be a rival for his throne. The Nox Arcana version feels to me like it's about some baby boy who didn't manage to get snuck out of town in time.

So far this version is so much better than all the other arrangements of coventry carol. They're all way too happy and this one has the right amount of somber sadness. Those who dislike this take couldn't be more wrong.

Another album titled Songcatcher 2: the tradition that inspired the movie, has a lot of the old folk song in it, and if you're interested, give them a listen, some of the songs include, Black Jack Davey, Will the Weaver, Babes in the Woods, Leather Britches (Originally known as Lord MacDonalds Reel), little Birdie, etc.

The changes were made as the songs were sung by memory, and passed on that way, like the bards of old would do, as the mountain folks who sung them lived far from civilization, and had little to no access to books and schools. The Original style was emotional, passionate, and earthy/natural, as the singers didn't have refined voices, which helped it convey the songs emotions, so you felt what they felt, and experienced what they experienced.

One such song is a very old medieval tune originally titled "Conversation with Death" was later named Oh Death, and sung in its original lyrics, other songs include Single girl , and When the Mountains cry, sung by Aidan Quinn, When they were taught "knee to knee", it was actually that, mother and daughter would sit facing each other till their knees were practically touching and the songs were taught verse by verse and word for word, but as time progressed, there were changes made.

It is songs like this, as well as Little Mathy Groeves, Pretty Saro, and Barbara Allen, that were carried by our English, Irish, Scottish and Scots-Irish ancestors, into the New World, by of course, word of mouth and sung as lulabys, and for entertainment, before the advent of radio, they were taught in what is known as Knee to knee style of teaching, where mothers would pass these songs down from generation to generation, a Movie titled SongCatcher, has a lot of those song in it.

This is absolutely amazing. It's like a sad lullaby, and I listen to it every night.
