Also, the reason for these decisions reflect the text and not the line. If one did not include these "lifts" as we called them, all of the words would be stuck together creating words that are not real. This happens at 1:13, "Oh Danny boy (comma) oh Danny boy" as it is written in the music. Therefore you would add a small lift because of the comma and because the next word begins with a vowel. If you did not it would sound like this "Oh Danny boyoh Danny boy". We want two words, not boy-ee-oh

I believe the answer to all of your statements is this: "artistic freedom". I am not sure of your age or current occupation, but when/if you desire or have the possibility to conduct a choir you will have to make your own artistic choices, of which are your opinions of what you believe is the "correct" way to express the composer's feelings/motives etc. for the piece. And no matter what you do, someone, somewhere is going to disagree with your opinion and nit pick at it.

I heard them sing last year and thought similar things. They did our Father and he threw in all of these crazy breaths that put many musical lines to their death. Probably the third best college choir in the country though, so pretty good. He is super nice though! Who ever thought that an ego could be displayed in breath marks? lol.

at 00:10, why would someone choose to take breath at the expense of a musical line? Same thing at :34 and 1:13 If it is/was written that way, I'd say the same thing to Wagner. When the women sing the melody, that is the perfect example of not breaking apart such a musical line and let them sing! I love the unison at :15 At :26 the basses seemed to have left the building. In fact, the basses in this video are the weakest section. It's not that forward sound you usually hear from them.

@choirgeek2012 I would be interested in your thoughts as to what "baffles" you regarding this conductor's choice of "musical things". Please be more specific about what "musical choices" you find "suspect" and why. Hoping to learn something that I'm not hearing.

Every time I hear the choir under this guys direction, I'm baffled at why he chooses to do some musical things. Choir sounds great. It's just that his musical choices are sometimes very suspect. We do love that Luther sound though!
