Germany dragged into WW1, lost and had sanctions imposed on them which caused WW2, lost and the what happened next created the cold war. We now have the EU threatening war with Russian over the Ukraine. Don't tell me such a conflict wouldn't be a nuclear war. Being beastly to the Germans may have caused a nuclear apocalypse. Well done.

Different times - like when Thomas Jefferson was rogering his slaves and speaking of equality. Like when we were SURE Saddam had an atom bomb loaded. It's a stern warning for the future when you will be asked to think a certain way by the GOV - coz 10 years later you will be told--oops, we were wrong. But sucked in you will be coz we always are..... The Italians and Ukrainians are now romantic or friends--but wait, didn't they fight alongside Hitler ? Don't be beastly to the Italians or Ukrainians ? The price of objective thought is to be isolated. Are you ready for that ?

That someone could write this song, be proud of it, and receive praise for it is a sad commentary on the human race.

somewhere out there there is a danish translation. recorded by actor Mogens Wieth it was not receiving much airplay. don't antagonice our new german friends. "Die preusser hat man entweder am hals oder an die fûsse kriechend!". Das gilt heute noch!

In Coward's prologue, what is his word between "rather" and "view"? I would suspect it would be "intolerant" but it sounds like "totolerant" but, to my knowledge there is no such word. If it is "tolerant", that doesn't make sense to me because, if I interpret the song correctly, its message is to the British (and others) who were intolerant to the Germans. Any ideas?

Alice Eve and Craig Ferguson brought me here. This song is pretty good.

Ofcourse, written in post war mentality it does make a bit of sense. Holding this song up to Germans now would be absolutely ridiculous.

Having read a few of the comments below, I'd just like to say I found that rather jolly. Dear Noel!

and now Germany is one of the most peaceful generous European nations, practically funding the European union... looks like the policy of being nice to the Germans paid off. history kind of proved Noel Coward was a short sighted stupid bigot.

He had a sense of humor little people understand anymore these days.

Ok so I get that this is an of-the-time song when the fear of Germany or rather certain political parties in Germany would make another world war. But if you applied it to nowadays it's quite true that in this present time hating on Germans as a whole country just-because of the past is a pointless and ignorant exercise. Nazi Germany of the past was a totalitarian state, but that doesn't mean all Germans wanted to follow Hitler and his ideals willingly during that time either. They aren't synonymous with eachother, so yes hate Nazis, but do not automatically hate Germans. :P

Hi efrem1, I thought America got involved in WW2 as a result of Pearl Harbour? Are you seriously suggesting that if it hadn't been for misplaced Anglophilia America would have sent Hirohito a thank you note for the attack?

Well as an American, it is high time to admit that it was a mistake to help you British out. It was you all that used your charm to suck us into two world wars that led to the lost of our liberties that the country enjoyed in the 19th Century. Charles Lindbergh was right.
