I looked for Jesus but I couldn't find him. They had to hang him on a cross for me to find his ass. Too bad he was already dead...

Leadbelly was Kurt's fave performer. Kurt also had a phase where he was Christian and really believed in it. No hating people.

This song is about sacrifice. Originally this song was probably intend to convey a christian message. However, one can see a broader message in this song. Christ is never explicitly mentioned. Instead the person in song is refered to as 'he' or 'him'. Additionally, the violence committed by 'they' while very similar to Jesus's ordeal has slight variations in language. He is bit in the side not stabbed with a spear. He is wooped up the hill not whipped. This allows the song to have a more personal message. It could be seen as a song about someone taking the punishment for something the narrator did. It could also be seen as a reflection on the act of sarifice. While the language is matter of fact, the vocal delivery can contain very strong emotion. So while this song can be about Jesus, it can also be about someone in your own life that sacrificed themself for you when needed help.

wow. i didnt expect all the religious comments. ... that's fuckin stupid. yes... be happy that you believe a human sacrifice (that was also a suicide, deicide, homicide, and fratricide) is a moral action that 'saved the souls' of humanity. ... that's right... a human sacrificed worked. immoral, false nonsense. and christianity is the better of the three major religions....
