You MUST hear the classy Scott Walker version. You'll never come back to the others.

I love this version- Nilsson rarely sounds this passionate- But it's the only song on the album that I think Newman did more effectively. And I don't like that Newman album as much as the couple he did after it. This is just very unsettling. Which was intentional.

What a waste of talent. He was only 53 years old when he died in 1994.I remember watching the point as a kid and thinking what a great song.

this gets me every time, nothing but the blowing gales to start and building up til the line "it's too late", where his voice cracks, its heaven. its like the jimi version of sunshine of your love, the song wouldna existed without the original but somehow it adds a whole new angle. and what an angle to add if i may say

Newman's studio version was two years old at this point. His next album was much more like NSN's production, very stripped down as opposed to the debut album's lush arrangements. I think if he record "Cowboy" around this time, he would have approached it similarly to Nilsson's version. Also, you know Newman played the piano parts on this album, right?

Beautiful. But also try Scott Walker's version.

@PrivatePyles I'm not saying about Nilsson's voice. Just the the choice of background music. Nilsson chose Wind blowing, Piano, and guitar. Newman chose an orchestra and a lone trumpet which really made it feel like a cowboy song or movie. Newmans version makes me feel like I'm watching a John Wayne movie with the instruments.

@Lrg8607 I dont even think Newman himself would make that call. Nilsson's voice is absolutly perfect on this track.

@Sshelly34213 Im pretty sure that the Midnight Cowboy tune came first then Nillson and Newman referenced that tune for this song. Nilsson Sings Newman came out in 1970, Midnight Cowboy came out in 1969. Also I've never heard a Newman version of this song that has that ending.

Brainwasher9876: It is actually an electronic harpsichord towards the end. I like harpsichords in general - too bad they're not used as much anymore. BTW, the cover art for the album cover was done by Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean. Thanks for the comment tip!

@garonpresley a hint for youtube, next time you send a message to someone move your cursor over their comment and hit reply, or they won't know you wrote it to them. Are you sure it's a harpsichord though? Harpsichords were famous for their inability to change their volume due to their plucking mechanisms. Maybe they used some sort of electric harpshicord with amps?

Brainwasher: The other instrument is a harpsichord, a centuries old instrument that's similar to the piano, but was made nearly obsolete by the popularity of the piano. It was often used in baroque music. It played prominently in the Paul Mariat worldwide smash "Love is Blue" from the late '60s and many other great pop and even rock songs. If I'm not mistaken Mozart composed a lot of his music on the harpsichord. Love the sound of it!

Can anyone tell me the instruments played in the background? I hear piano but the other one I can't quite nail.
