I was a little busy when I listened to this for the first time, so I didn't watch the video, although I listened carefully to the song, because I was like, This is pretty good; I like this. Then later I watched the video, and, wow, much better without the video. ("You can only pretend to have what you want, you can never really have it." Eek!) Although I'm not sure to what extent a music video can wreck a song. I guess it depends on whether you remember it.Edit: Although I guess some songs are intentionally designed to be an emotional trap: (don't pay attention to this part right away) Reverse the sentiment of what I'm about to say: (louder and more noticeable) Very happy feelings.... Very happy feelings.... Very happy feelings! (& repeat the 'very happy feelings' part several times).... Who likes being around somebody like that? Smile to your face, then whisper behind your back, put on a caring front, then, BAM. I never cared. And it's your fault, anyway! You should have realized what I was really like! And maybe I should have. Maybe it was just silly to think that one of these indie artists wasn't a cynic. Of course, you'd have to be pretty suspicious not to ever be caught off-guard by a cynic, and not all of them make it obvious by screaming instead of singing and refusing to write a melody line.... Indeed, what a subtle cynic we have here! What subtle negativity! And people wonder why she doesn't sell more CDs. Yes, who wouldn't pay for the pleasure of hearing veiled put-downs? "You want to show me love I will never understand.... So, if you hate yourself the way I do, buy my CD!" But I guess liking this music isn't supposed to be about you living your life; it's about you trying to make a mockery of the whole idea of living your life. It's about becoming of one of these ubiquitous pedants who wants to ruin everything: even music!, yeah, even (trying to be) popular music.... It's to serve as the topic of one of these standard-issue speeches about frivolous cynicism (or something equally meaningless and complex-sounding and seemingly impressive) that the unwashed masses do not understand.... (Too much of an artist for beauty! Way too cool for fashion!) Because if you cannot have something worth having, then at least you can have something that nobody else has, right? After all, the great thing is to be better than other people, not to have what you need.... So I suppose if what is wanted is art which is distinct from what is liked, the way to preserve it is to leave it in its august isolation. It certainly deserves no less, for the smiley-smiley cynicism, (that smiley-smiley skittishness from anything so embarrassing as happiness), which is so easy to make, and so difficult to be around.

It's awesome that one of the best songs of 2014 also has one of the best videos. The whole 'Slow Phaser' album is tremendous, bursting with catchy hooks and lyricism that toes the line between thoughtfulness and knee-slapping humor. It's AOTY material.
