Desertshore, Nico (1971)

"The anemic, moribund, suspenseful atmospheres penned by her church-like harmonium and Cale's viola belonged to a catacomb. By now, it was more than fatalism: it was eternal angst. It was fear, both bleak and majestic, leading to a mental paralysis that was both childish and cosmic. Each song was an enigma, and the singer a sphinx. But she was also an explorer, albeit an explorer of the inner world. Nico's cadaveric, petrified voice wandered through the labyrinth of a wasted mind, scouring inner landscapes made of nightmares, visions and nameless shadows for the ultimate meaning. Or, better, Nico lived on another planet, and was the Homer who sang about the apocalypse of planet Earth, as viewed from up above." -Piero Scaruffi on Desertshore

It IS a good composition imo, really cool melody, but John Cale did arrange it. It's a collaborative album really but Nico supplies the emotion, which is the most important thing.

Well, she wrote the main harmonium riffs, wrote the lyrics and sang... Isn't it enough?

This period was by far the most exciting and experimental in C20th popular music. Pop music now - and for a number of years - is/has been largely either mimicry or ad jingle. This is due to a variety of factors - read 'White Bicycles' by Joe Boyd and 'Revolution in the Head', by Iain MacDonald, But the heart of the problem, I fear, is that at its core, it is a limited form and the possibilities for mutability through syncretism with other musical forms seem to have been exhausted.

actually nico wrote and composed all the songs, just because someone produces doesn't mean they compose.you have to look at who gets the song writing credits

@erinmerle I hate to contribute to this image, but musically Nico only wrote the score for the harmonium, all the rest is played and composed by John Cale, who produced the album.

Nico had real poetic and musical genius. It was beyond simple originality, it had implications in the collective unconscious. So sad her life was screwed up by drugs. Would she have been such a great composer without them? - the irritating question. John Cale also a genius.

I think that Nico wrote this song for her mother who died in 1970. She was buried beside her mother, so it was quite fitting. This is the translation: Dear little mummy At last I can be near you Longing and loneliness Are redeemed through blessings Dear little mummy At last I can be near you Longing and loneliness Are redeemed through blessings The cradle that is your native dress Floats along your magnificence The pain in your heart turned into joy Holds back in the conquered flood

This is really an incredible composition. No one seems to give Nico any credit musically which makes no sense whatsoever. It's pure stupidity that the looks, the cult figure status, and the male artists she's associated with overshadow music like this.
