It was one of Lou Reed's sharpest moments of prescience when he wrote this for, and about, Nico. She became her own blackened shroud, her own costume. In her way, she knows as much about the inherent alienation which comes with all art as Brecht did.

@lagousi You don't consider her work with the Velvets "serious"? It's true she preferred singing her own songs, but then she often covered songs.

she never really enjoyed the time with the velvet underground because she always wanted to make serious music and work for the music as itself and not for the show and popularity... after she left the band she was free to develop herself if you don´t already know it listen to her singing "das lied vom einsamen mädchen" stunning !

Not one comment on this video, huh? I used to think Nico was a horrible singer. It must have been her deep voice and thick, Germanic accent that scared me into thinking that. She's no spring chicken here, and yet she nails almost every note in this song (a capella, no less). She's even more in tune here than on the original (20 years earlier). This was a big, fat slice of humble pie for me to digest. Truly dynamite!! I'm more than impressed. RIP Nico. RIP !!!
